Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder

The worst lies OCD tells you are the ones that feel the most real.
— Kimberley Quinlan

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) involves intrusive thoughts (obsessions) and repetitive actions (compulsions) aimed at alleviating anxiety. Obsessions are unwanted, distressing thoughts or images that cause significant anxiety and disrupt daily functioning. These can include fears about contamination, harming others, or concerns about symmetry and order. People may also experience obsessive thoughts about health, relationships, or existential issues.

Compulsions are actions performed to reduce the anxiety caused by these thoughts, such as excessive cleaning, checking, counting, or seeking reassurance. These behaviors may also involve mental rituals like repeating phrases or avoiding certain situations. While these actions may temporarily relieve anxiety, they often create a cycle that reinforces the disorder.

Living with OCD can be isolating and exhausting. People may feel trapped by their thoughts and behaviors, unable to find relief even when they know their actions are excessive. Therapy can provide tools to manage these symptoms, helping individuals challenge their thought patterns, reduce compulsive behaviors, and ultimately find greater peace and control. Therapy offers a way to break the cycle of obsessions and compulsions, creating space for healing and personal growth.

When working with clients navigating OCD, I start by building a trusting relationship where you don’t have to face your symptoms alone. I understand that OCD can bring more than just unwanted thoughts or compulsions. It can be accompanied by shame, self-doubt, and isolation. My goal is to create a space where all parts of your experience are welcomed and acknowledged.

I focus on understanding how OCD shows up in your life, what it may be protecting you from, and how it has helped you cope in the past. Together, we’ll explore the deeper emotional layers and work to build a sense of safety and compassion, allowing you to respond to your symptoms with more choice and control.

With warmth and respect, I’ll guide you toward reclaiming the parts of your life that matter to you. You’ll learn to manage your symptoms while gaining greater freedom from OCD’s grip.
