Teens

Adolescents are not monsters. They are just people trying to learn how to make it among the adults in the world, who are probably not so sure themselves.
— Virginia Satir

Adolescence is a time of significant change, filled with both growth and challenges. Teens often explore their identity, including gender, sexual orientation, and sense of self, which can be stressful, especially without adequate support. Body image issues are also prevalent, influenced by social media and physical changes, leading to self-doubt and perfectionism.

Academically, teens face pressure to succeed, with high expectations for grades, extracurricular activities, and future planning. This pressure can result in burnout, anxiety, and feelings of overwhelm, amplified by uncertainties about the future. Peer conflicts, bullying, and social media anxiety can also negatively impact their mental health, as many feel the pressure to maintain a curated online presence.

Teens also navigate complex romantic relationships and family dynamics. First loves and breakups can be emotionally distressing, and the struggle for independence often leads to conflicts with parents. Cultural and religious expectations may add further stress, especially when personal beliefs clash with family traditions. Many teens feel misunderstood, leading to feelings of isolation. Mental health issues, including anxiety, depression, and eating disorders, can become more prominent during this time, with some teens turning to self-harm or substance use to cope. Teens with ADHD may also struggle with organization and impulsivity, affecting their academic performance and self-esteem.

As a therapist, I provide a space for teens to explore their feelings, concerns, and identity in a supportive, nonjudgmental environment. I understand that adolescence can be a time of confusion and emotional turbulence, and I aim to help teens navigate these challenges in a way that feels empowering. Whether it’s managing stress, dealing with body image issues, or addressing struggles in relationships, I help teens develop healthier ways to cope with the pressures they face.

I work with teens to build emotional resilience, teaching them skills to handle overwhelming feelings, improve their self-esteem, and manage their anxiety. Together, we explore any self-doubt or perfectionistic tendencies, helping them recognize their strengths and build confidence. I also help teens process difficult emotions around identity, family expectations, and peer pressure, guiding them toward self-acceptance and healthier boundaries.

When working with teens, I prioritize open communication and trust. It’s important for them to feel heard and understood, so we can explore their experiences in a way that makes sense for them. In addition to focusing on mental health, I work with teens to improve their coping strategies, develop stronger problem-solving skills, and set realistic goals for their future. My goal is to support teens in finding balance, building emotional intelligence, and navigating the challenges of adolescence with confidence and clarity.
